“So, what is the shiitake mushroom kit exactly?”

I’m glad you asked. Our shiitake grow kits are made out of hardwood sawdust. They come ready-to-fruit and are easy to take care of. You can keep them inside your house or office, or outside in your garden if it is warm enough outside. Each kit will produce 3-5 pounds of shiitake mushrooms over the course of multiple flushes.

How to use our shiitake mushroom kit to grow more delicious mushrooms

First, you need to order your kit from us and receive it in the mail. Once you have received the kit, you can begin growing your shiitakes at home. Here’s a step-by-step process for you to use:

Step 1: Place the shiitake kit in the refrigerator for 24 hours, if it is below 40 degrees Fahrenheit outside you can also leave it outside for 24 hours.

Step 2: Cut the plastic bag off of the shiitake block. Leave the plastic on the bottom so mushrooms will not fruit out the bottom of the block. Place the block on a plate or baking sheet to hold excess water.

Step 3: Place the block in a well-lit room but not direct sunlight. Begin misting the block 3-4 times a day. Ideally the block should be in an environment with humidity around 80%. You may place a loose transparent bag over the block to increase humidity. Or place the block in a small open bin.

Step 4: After 3-4 days mushrooms should begin to form on the block but will
be very small. Continue to mist 3-4 times per day, after 4 more days mushrooms should form to full maturity. Harvest when the cap has moved far enough away from the stem so you can see the gills of the mushroom.

Step 5: Allow the block to rest for 2-3 weeks, no misting needed.

Step 6: Submerge the block in water for 5-10 hours. They are quite buoyant so you may need a brick or other heavy object to keep it under water.

Step 7: Resume misting the block twice a day. Mushrooms should form in the next 7 days.

Step 8: Repeat steps 4-6 two or three times. The amount of mushrooms
which fruit will decrease each time you submerge it. After fruiting 3-5 times place the block outside and compost.

Why you should grow your own mushrooms with a shiitake mushroom kit

First off, you will have the freshest mushrooms around available to you with your own shiitake mushroom kit. How exciting is that! You will also be in a position to know exactly what is going into your food, which is very important these days, especially as many conventional methods of growing food involves the use of synthetic chemicals.

You also get the opportunity to watch as the mushrooms grow. This is a wonderful way to further a relationship with the food you put in your body. This process will also show you how easy it really is to grow your own mushrooms at home.  Furthermore, shiitake mushrooms are very healthful. These mushrooms are a great source of vitamin D, especially after you expose them to the sun.

They also have favorable amounts of fiber, minerals, and B vitamins. For instance, 15 grams of shiitakes provide 39% of your recommended daily intake (RDI) of copper; 33% of the RDI of vitamin B5; 11% of the RDI of riboflavin; 11% of the RDI of niacin; 10% of the RDI of selenium. There are also single-digit percentages for manganese, zinc, vitamin B6, folate, and vitamin D.
