The biggest benefits of buying an organic mushroom grow kit

There are plenty of reasons why people choose organic food options over conventional food options. As HelpGuide points out, “How your food is grown or raised can have a major impact on your mental and emotional health as well as the environment. Organic foods often have more beneficial nutrients, such as antioxidants, than their conventionally-grown counterparts and people with allergies to foods, chemicals, or preservatives may find their symptoms lessen or go away when they eat only organic foods.” Below I go through the main reasons HelpGuide provides for eating an organic food diet, and how these organic mushroom grow kits align with these reasons.

“Organic produce contains fewer pesticides.” Conventional agriculture uses an array of pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides to help produce large amounts of food outdoors. It is possible that residues from these products remain on or inside the produce. Using organic food will help avoid some of these harsh, conventional products.

“Organic food is often fresher because it doesn’t contain preservatives that make it last longer.” You certainly cannot get mushrooms much fresher than ones you can grow in your own kitchen! Forget farm-to-table, you have counter-to-table. Or maybe even table-to-table if you choose to grow your kitchen on your dining room table.

“Organic farming tends to be better for the environment.” As HelpGuide points out, “Organic farming practices may reduce pollution, conserve water, reduce soil erosion, increase soil fertility, and use less energy. Farming without synthetic pesticides is also better for nearby birds and animals as well as people who live close to farms.”

“Organic food is GMO-free.” Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) or genetically engineered (GE) have been developed to be resistant to an array of pesticides and insecticides that are used on produce in large conventional agriculture. Many have questioned how GMOs interact with humans and if they are healthy to consume. Each of these kits in the organic mushroom grow kit line are free of GMOs.

The types of organic mushroom growing kits available

There are many edible mushrooms that are still virtually untouched by the general public because chain grocery stores primarily carry only a couple of varieties. The button mushroom and shiitake are the most common I see while perusing the grocery store aisles. However, there are many other tasty, gourmet mushrooms available to grow in your own home. Here is a list of the organic mushroom growing kits we have available:
  • Shiitake mushroom
  • Blue oyster mushroom
  • Lion’s mane mushroom
  • Golden oyster mushroom
  • Reishi mushroom (not for eating, best for teas or tincture)
  • Black oyster mushroom
  • Pioppino mushroom
  • Pink oyster mushroom
  • Phoenix oyster mushroom (aka Italian oyster mushroom)
  • King trumpet mushroom (aka king oyster mushroom)

Choosing the right organic mushroom kit for your needs

These kits come ready-to-fruit and you should be able to get your first flush of fresh mushrooms within two weeks of starting the kit. The fact that these kits come ready to use make them easier than other options. However, it is still important to use proper care to get the most out of your kit. First, you will want to use your growing kit in an area that receives enough light during the day that you could comfortably read a book. Many will use their kitchen or dining room if using a single kit or two. You will want to ensure that the kit is receiving fresh air exchange as well. Here is the method for beginning to use your mushroom kit.

Cut holes into the bag once you are ready to fruit the mushrooms. Mushrooms love oxygen and humidity, so you will need to have appropriate temperatures and relative humidity levels to grow delicious mushrooms. For lion’s mane kits, we like to cut “V” shapes into the plastic bag. You can see how I do it in the video. This allows the mushrooms space to grow out of. Lion’s mane likes to fruit up at the top of the bag. You can roll the bag down and flip it over so it stays in place.

For oyster varieties, we recommend using an “X” shape. Keep in mind that it is okay if you cut into the substrate a little bit. The mycelium is so well-colonized and aggressive in spreading that the kit will still work in producing mushrooms. Once your bag is cut, you should mist the mycelium block with a spray bottle two or three times each day. You will want to keep temperatures and humidity levels ideal for the species of mushroom you are growing. Doing so will allow for maximum yields. Check out our growing kits page to see ideal temperature and humidity levels for the various species. Additionally, you can use an 18 gallon tote to put your grow kit in. Using a tote like this allows for good humidity and moisture as you can directly spray the walls of the container and it will stay appropriately wet.
